Get ready for a lively, fast-paced, inspirational day of learning and practical application of techniques to use with children!


Who should attend?
Friday and Saturday daytime activities are for early childhood and school-age practitioners working in centers, group and family child care, Head Start teachers, school district teachers, administrators, educators, directors, students and advocates working with children birth to 12.

Friday evening’s activities are geared towards parents and family child care practitioners but all are welcome to attend.


Keynote session with Bev Bos & Michael Leeman
Creative Art, Music & Language—K2C219
This session focuses on what it means to be creative and how the environments we provide for children either encourage or discourage children’s natural inclinations to explore and create. Bev and Michael will cover children’s development and brain research, including suggestions for practical and age-appropriate activities from Bev’s teaching experience. Methods using songs and chants, hands-on art, hands-on science, literacy and the story writing process, Bev will also recommend resource materials for teachers and parents.


11:00-12:30 Breakout Sessions

Play to Learn
Have you ever felt like you need a day to play? Do your students squirm while learning? Would you like to participate in some cool and creative “Play to Learn” games that will help get the squirmies out while putting the learning in? If so, this is the session for you! “Play to Learn” is designed to show “big kids” how to get down on the little kids level and in the process instill in them a love for learning, educational exploration, and down right jump around, all fall down fun!! After the School Bell Rings: Let’s Play
After the school bell rings, school age children are full of energy. Take advantage of this high level of energy and learn how to create play opportunities that all children can participate in. Come prepared to play, while learning about incorporating the Learning Standards into your day. Presenter: Lillian McCuen, Executive Director, Education Works, Inc.

Ensuring a Safe & Stimulating Outdoor Experience
This professional development opportunity will help teachers explore outdoor environments. Topics will include engaging children on the playground, identifying serious hazards and usage of the “zone” of supervision techniques. Presenter: Tyrone Scott II, MBA, CPSI, Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children

The Play Experience: Hands, Heart and Mind
Play experiences are key to children forming early understandings about their natural world, mathematical and early literacy ideas, and social competence. Through the world of reusable resources children have the opportunity to explore the depths of their imagination.  The constructivist format of this hands-on professional training for adults mirror the way children learn about their world, which is by constructing knowledge from direct experience. Presenters: Susan Blandford, Executive Director/Founder, St. Louis Teachers' Recycle Center, Inc, Patricia Durkin, Instructor of Early Childhood Development Fontbonne University, St. Louis, MO and Amy L. Peterson, Sheboygan Area School District in WI 

Ready for School, Ready for Life – Making the Connection Between Play and Children’s Healthy Social Emotional Development
This session will bring greater meaning and appreciation for the saying, “Play is a Child’s Work”. Participants will gain an understanding of how play can promote children’s healthy social/emotional development. Participants will be introduced to games and play scenarios that offer children opportunities to develop social/emotional skills. Concrete ideas to include throughout the daily routine will be shared. Presenter: Nefertiti Bruce, Devereux

The Early Childhood Years: Why Play is Important for Literacy and Overall Development
This session will stress the benefits associated with dramatic, free, and structured play and how it enhances a young child’s literacy skills. The importance of play will be examined by using Bloom’s educational taxonomies. Presenters: Dena Riddick-Bracey and Erica M. Reisinger, The Free Library of Philadelphia
